What is a Brazilian Butt Lift?

Brazilian butt augmentation, or Brazilian butt lift (BBL), is a type of buttock augmentation procedure which uses a person’s own fat to naturally increase the shape and contour of the buttocks. Liposuction removes fat from other areas of the body (usually the stomach, hips, and thighs). The fat is then transferred to the buttocks. Additional liposuction can be completed around the buttock to improve the appearance of lift and contour, resulting in a perkier and more youthful buttock. The procedure became popular in Brazil and is now routinely performed in the United States.

Why should I consider Butt Augmentation?

Most patients that want a Brazilian butt lift are looking to increase fullness, roundness, and projection of their buttocks. A BBL can improve the balance of the patient’s figure. Also, they are often looking to enhance their self-image and self-confidence. A Brazilian butt lift can correct a flat, sagging buttocks and asymmetry.

Are implants used in a Brazilian Butt Lift?

No, a BBL isn’t the same as getting butt implants. BBL involves a fat transfer, unlike silicone buttock implants. Fat transfer allows the surgeon to create a natural, ideal shape for your bottom. The surgeon transfers fat from other parts of your body through liposuction then is directly administered into the buttocks to achieve the desired results.

For example, Dr. Shridharani can liposuction excess fat from areas like the muffin top and the outer/inner thighs and place that fat into the gluteal areas. This creates the hourglass shape of the lower back while framing the buttock from hipbone to the upper lateral thigh. It provides volume enhancement to the gluteal region, which also provides a lifting effect.

What is the Brazilian Butt Lift Procedure?

There are multiple techniques to perform a BBL. Most surgeons will first perform fat extraction. This is done through liposuction of fat from various parts of the body. Smaller cannulas will be better for extracting fat to obtain ideal results. Large cannulas may compromise the fat extracted thus giving the patient poor results. Dr. Shridharani first contours the buttock through liposuction to make the result even more noticeable. Other regular areas patients request for liposuction are the stomach, the back, and thighs. The pure fat is then injected through various areas with special cannulas. The amount of fat injected into the buttocks of each patient varies with the amount of fat available from liposuction. BBL allows for a shorter patient recovery period than implants because it’s a less invasive procedure.

My patients have the ability to have their procedures at the Luxurgery office or at area hospitals and “surgicenters” in New York City. Dr. Shridharani’s operating room and facility have certification and accreditation by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAAASF). Our team provides patients with the option of having their procedure in the safety, convenience, and comfort of our office/facility.

Patients do not have to stay overnight and generally go home the same day. Some of our patients choose to stay in a nearby luxury hotel with private nurses who monitor them overnight while they rest and recover.

How much fat is retained after a Butt Lift?

Patients retain 60-80 percent of the transferred fat, as some will be reabsorbed back into the body. This is why final results may not be visible for up to a year. It takes the body some time to adjust and stop the reabsorption of fat. As you gain and lose weight after the surgery the results may change because the transferred fat will be just like any other fat in your body.

Brazilian Butt Lift Recovery

After the surgery, the plastic surgeon will put the patient in a special compression garment to treat the areas. We recommend that the patient wears the garment for six to eight weeks to ensure that areas heal properly. This also helps to minimize swelling, decrease discomfort, and help the skin retract.

Immediately following the surgery, patients should avoid high impact activities, especially any type of bouncing. After one month, patients can resume light activities, such as walking at a fast pace. Most patients can return to their normal activities six to eight weeks after surgery. After the fat cells have stabilized, more vigorous activities can resume, as they should be able to withstand the impact of fat-burning exercises such as jogging or running.

Can I sit on my buttocks after BBL surgery?

One of the most important recovery tips regarding Brazilian butt lift surgery is to not sit directly on your buttocks for at least six to eight weeks after the procedure. Patients should sleep on their stomach. If you absolutely do have to sit, patients should use a donut pillow or inflatable pillow. Placing the pillow behind your legs is helpful to avoid putting pressure on the fat graft by raising the buttock. This is very important to achieve long lasting results. Sitting directly on the buttocks can affect blood circulation in the area. Reduced blood circulation could destroy the fat cells transferred to the buttocks. After the first eight weeks of recovery, it is important to still use a cushion when sitting, and to avoid sitting for prolonged periods of time.

When an I resume normal activities after a Brazilian Butt Lift?

Most patients may resume their normal daily activities within one week after having fat transfer to the buttocks with Dr. Shridharani. Patients typically return to work within 7-10 days after surgery. Light physical activity may be resumed after two weeks. Intense “cardio” may be resumed by 3-4 weeks. Strength training is typically permitted at 5-6 weeks post-surgery. After the fat cells have stabilized, more vigorous activities can resume, as they should be able to withstand the impact of fat-burning exercises such as jogging or running.

Brazilian Butt Augmentation Results

It takes the body six months to one year to see the FINAL results of most surgeries. However, you will see the overall change in contour and fullness within days after the procedures. It is common to have swelling and bruising during this time, so the shape will change and improve in the ensuing weeks to months.

How common are Brazilian Butt Lifts?

In 2015, more than 14,000 buttock augmentations were performed in the US. The popularity of Brazilian butt lifts are on the rise. According to 2015 ASPS (American Society of Plastic Surgeons), there was a 28 percent increase in Brazilian butt lifts from 2014 to 2015. A buttock procedure was performed on average every 30 minutes of every day.

Are There Side Effects to a Brazilian Butt Lift?

Most common side effects include: numbness, soreness, swelling, nausea, and general discomfort. We advise patients to be up walking after surgery to reduce the risk of blood clots.

Is the Brazilian Butt Lift Procedure Safe?

Some studies conducted in recent years have shed light on the potential safety concerns related to Brazilian Butt Lift surgery. It’s important to ask questions of your surgeon and to take your time as you seek information about this procedure. It seems as though the quick rise of the BBL in popularity led to a lack of ethical practice by some surgeons. In the right hands, Brazilian Butt Lift surgery is very safe and also very rewarding. Here in our NYC office, board-certified plastic surgeon Sachin Shridharani is happy to answer your questions about Brazilian Butt Lift surgery, how it’s performed, and how he performs the procedure to achieve the best results in the safest manner. I’ve Heard the Sculptra can be used for a Butt Lift. Why Would I Choose BBL Over That Option?

In the last few years, you may have begun to hear more about the Sculptra Butt Lift. To be very transparent, this is not a service that we offer at this time. Sculptra can increase tissue volume. This has been proven. However, the way in which it works is quite different than BBL surgery. This is important to look at so you can discern which approach may be best for your desired outcome.

There are a few reasons why Brazilian Butt Lift surgery may be preferable to the nonsurgical alternative. The first may be that, when we look at the natural anatomy of the buttocks, it’s fat that does most of the contouring. If you have a relatively flat backside, it’s most likely because you lack adipose tissue in this part of your body. We’re all prone to more or less fat growth in certain areas. If you want a more rounded derrière, you may benefit from having more fat cells there. Sculptra doesn’t affect your fat cells. It plumps facial and body contours by stimulating collagen production. Collagen exists primarily in deeper layers of your skin, not in the layer of fat beneath. Because a Sculptra Butt Lift adds volume through collagen production vs. fat injections, the results you can achieve will be more subtle. Immediately, you can see that a Brazilian Butt Lift would be more suitable for you if you wish to gain a more significant volume increase.

Another aspect of BBL vs. Sculptra Butt Lift to consider is longevity. Your body doesn’t consistently make the same amount of collagen throughout your lifetime. Sculptra stimulates profound collagen production, which can be beneficial. However, it’s not indefinite. The aging process works against the collagen that is present at any point in time. This means that the collagen that is prompted to the buttocks through injections of Sculptra will, over time, degrade. Generally, this happens over a two to five-year period. When we inject fat into the buttocks, it, too, will be affected by the aging process but not to the extent that fat cells disappear.
