What is a Brazilian Butt Lift?

The “Brazilian butt lift” is a procedure where fat is liposuctioned from part of the body that the patient wants contoured (arms, tummy, love handles, back bra roll, thighs, hips, calves/ankles, etc…) and then has his/her own fat injected into the buttocks to improve fullness. The procedure was popularized in Brazil and now is performed routinely in the United States. Brazilian butt augmentation aka Brazilian butt lift (BBL) aka gluteal augmentation surgery is a type of buttock augmentation procedure which uses a person’s own fat to naturally increase the shape and contour of the buttocks. Liposuction is performed to remove fat from other areas of the body (usually the stomach, hips, and thighs). The fat is then transferred to the buttocks. Additional liposuction can be completed around the buttock to improve the appearance of lift and contour, resulting in a perkier and more youthful buttock.

Why should I consider a Brazilian Butt Lift with Dr. Shridharani?

Most patients interested in a Brazilian butt lift are looking to increase fullness, roundness, and projection of their buttocks. A BBL can improve the balance of the patient’s figure. Also, they are often looking to enhance their self-image and self-confidence. A Brazilian butt lift can correct a flat, sagging buttocks and asymmetry.

Do you use gluteal implants in a Brazilian Butt Lift?

No, a BBL isn’t the same as getting butt implants. BBL involves a fat transfer, unlike silicone buttock implants. Fat transfer allows the surgeon to create a natural, ideal shape for your bottom. The fat is transferred from other parts of your body through liposuction then re-administration directly into the buttocks to achieve the desired results. For example, Dr. Shridharani can liposuction excess fat from areas like the muffin top and the outer/inner thighs and place that fat into the under-projected gluteal areas. This creates the idealized hourglass shape of the lower back while framing the buttock from hipbone to the upper lateral thigh and provides volume enhancement to the gluteal region, which also provides a lifting effect.

How does Dr. Shridharani perform a Brazilian Butt Lift?

There are multiple techniques to perform a BBL. Most surgeons will first perform fat extraction. This is done through liposuction of fat from various parts of the body. Smaller cannulas will be better for extracting fat to obtain ideal results. Large cannulas may compromise the fat extracted thus giving the patient poor results. The buttock is first contoured through liposuction to make the result even more noticeable. Other regular areas patients request for liposuction are the stomach, the back, and thighs. The pure fat is then injected through various areas with special cannulas. The amount of fat injected into the buttocks of each patient varies with the amount of fat available from liposuction. BBL allows for a shorter patient recovery period than implants because it’s a less invasive procedure.

How much fat is retained after a Brazilian Butt Lift?

Patients retain 60-80 percent of the transferred fat, as some will be reabsorbed back into the body. This is why final results may not be visible for up to a year, as it takes the body some time to adjust and stop the reabsorption of fat. As you gain and lose weight after the surgery the results may change because the transferred fat will be just like any other fat in your body.

Can I sit on my buttocks after the procedure?

One of the most important recovery tips regarding Brazilian butt lift surgery is to not sit directly on your buttocks for at least six to eight weeks after the procedure. Patients are advised to sleep on their stomach, and if you absolutely do have to sit, it is recommended to use a donut pillow or inflatable pillow. Placing the pillow behind your legs is helpful to avoid putting pressure on the fat graft by raising the buttock. This is very important to achieve long lasting results, as sitting directly on the buttocks can affect blood circulation in the area. Reduced blood circulation could destroy the fat cells transferred to the buttocks. After the first eight weeks of recovery, it is important to still use a cushion when sitting, and to avoid sitting for prolonged periods of time.

What are the side effects of a Brazilian Butt Lift?

Most common side effects include: numbness, soreness, swelling, nausea, and general discomfort. We advise patients to be up walking after surgery to reduce the risk of blood clots.

What do I wear after my Brazilian Butt Lift?

After the surgery, the plastic surgeon will put the patient in a special compression garment to treat the areas where liposuction was performed. It is recommended that the patient wear the garment for six to eight weeks to ensure that areas where the fat was harvested heal properly. This also helps to minimize swelling, decrease discomfort, and help the skin retract.

When can I resume activities after my Brazilian Butt Lift?

Immediately follow the surgery, high impact activities should be avoided, especially any type of bouncing. After one month, light activities, such as fast-paced walking, can be performed. Most patients can return to their normal activities six to eight weeks after surgery. After the fat cells have stabilized, more vigorous activities can resume, as they should be able to withstand the impact of fat-burning exercises such as jogging or running.

When can I expect to see my final results?

It takes the body six months to one year to see the FINAL results of most surgeries. However, you will see the overall change in contour and fullness within days after the procedures. It is common to have swelling and bruising during this time, so the shape will change and improve in the ensuing weeks to months.
