What is Botox?

Botox Cosmetic is the only FDA approved treatment to temporarily improve the appearance of both mild to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabella) and crow’s feet (lines around the sides of the eyes) in adults. Botox can also be used to soften the lines and creases on the forehead, around the mouth, chin, and neck.

How long does Botox last?

Every patient is different depending on his or her metabolism of Botox. Most patients find their Botox injections last around 3-4 months. Certain patient metabolize Botox faster than others leaving them with Botox’s effects for 2-3 months, while others have the amazing benefit for up to 6 months. Over time Botox can fatigue the muscle allowing for less movement after the Botox wears off, allowing more time between injections.

How long does it take for the effects to kick in after injection?

You may begin to notice results within 24 to 48 hours for moderate to severe frown lines. It takes about 7-10 days to see maximal results from Botox.

Can Botox be used to reduce the appearance of my widened jaw?

Yes. Patient’s with a strong masseter (chewing) muscle, often a result of TMJ or stress, can be relaxed by Botox and create a softer jawline.

Can Botox be used to treat headache symptoms associated with chronic migraines?

Botox became FDA approved treatment of chronic migraines in 2010.

What should I expect after Botox? Is there any down time?

After your injection, you should expect a little bit of swelling and slight redness, which seems to resolve/go away in a matter of hours. Avoiding heavy exercise, salty foods, alcohol, and sleeping face down will help avoid excessive swelling.

If I try Botox once will I need to continue treatments forever?

No! Most patients love their Botox injections so much they want to continue injections but it is not something you have to continue forever.

Can I have Botox injected while being pregnant?

Botox Cosmetic FAQ’s

Q: I am someone who is very expressive with talking. I have fine lines on my nose and forehead. Can Botox help these lines?

If you are someone who is often wrinkling your nose or forehead, Botox is a great way to treat or even prevent those fine lines from forming. Even after the Botox wears off, patients often find they are less likely to frown or wrinkle their nose because they have trained themselves out of the habit.

Q: I’m in my twenties… can I have Botox for preventative measures?

Botox in your “20’s” is becoming more and more common due to the concept of “preventive aesthetic medicine.” Every patient has to be seen and considered on a case-by- case basis. The prevention of wrinkles and taking care of one’s skin is appropriate when done safely and by a licensed practitioner who understands the anatomy, has trained extensively in the field of plastic surgery, and can match their skill set with your expectations. Also, preventing the wrinkles before they become prominent is helpful in preventing the need for other treatments that can be more expensive (fillers, lasers) in the future.
