Skin Care

Skin care is not limited to the products you use to cleanse and moisturize your skin. At LUXURGERY on Fifth Avenue, we go above and beyond. When you visit with our experienced staff, you can gain a clear understanding of what you skin may need from one year to the next and from one season to the next. More importantly, you can benefit from personal aesthetic treatments such as microneedling, chemical peels, and facials. All are tailored to bring out the best in your skin.

Why Is Skin Care Important?

Professional skin care, not just daily maintenance, is important to how your skin ages. The earlier that you begin to receive customized facials and focused rejuvenating treatments, the more resilient and supple your skin will be through the years.

Skin care treatments range in their intensity and also in their capabilities. The variety of techniques used in our NYC facility are designed to combat fine lines and wrinkles, to protect the skin from environmental factors such as UV exposure, and to promote an inside-out glow. Professional care can also encompass management for chronic skin conditions such as rosacea and acne.

Why do we need to use sunscreen?

Harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays cause sun damage on the skin, however, sunscreen blocks these rays to prevent sunburn. Blocking these rays will prevent many skin conditions and potential issues that could be harmful.

Is recurrent sun exposure linked to cancer?

While everyone is at a small risk for developing skin cancer, some individuals are more at risk than others. People with long-term, unprotected skin exposure are at an increased risk of developing skin malignancies. About 90% of certain skin cancers are linked to exposure of UV rays. Regular use of at least 15 SPF will reduce the risk of developing certain skin cancers by 40%.

What are the benefits of sunscreen?

Protecting the skin from UV rays will cut the likelihood of skin cancer in half. Preventing sun damage will also decrease the chances of photoaging of the skin. Leathery, thick skin, discoloration, lines, and wrinkles are common side effects of too much UV and sun exposure. Sunscreen will also maintain even skin tone.

When should I wear sunscreen?

Sunscreen should be applied every day, even if it is cloudy or raining. Even if a patient does not burn easily, sunscreen should be worn especially between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., the most intense times of the day for sun exposure.

What does SPF mean?

SPF is short for “sun protective factor” and refers to the ability to block UV rays. While no sunscreen provides 100% protection, the higher the SPF, the higher the protection. Skin would normally burn after 10 minutes of sun exposure. An SPF of 15 would protect the skin for about 150 minutes. Sunscreen should be reapplied at this time to continue protection.

What sunscreen is the most effective and convenient?

At LUXURGERY, we offer different creams, moisturizers, toners and more that also work as a sunscreen. Many different kinds of makeup also double as a sunscreen. It is best to use at least 30 SPF, but for some, a layer of SPF moisturizer or toner may do the trick. If a patient is using regular sunscreen, apply it after the daily skin/make-up routine. Choose a sunscreen that is waterproof to have the best and most effective protection.

What ingredients should I be looking for in my sunblock?

Make sure to use a sunscreen that contains at least one of the following ingredients: ecamsule, avobenzone, oxybenzone, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, or sulisobenzone.

Titanium and Zinc have been around for quite some time and work well for people with skin conditions and allergies. Titanium and Zinc reflect rays away from the skin while the other ingredients mentioned help the skin absorb the rays and break them down to prevent skin damage.

Where should I get my sunscreen?

The safest, most effective option is to see a trained clinician with knowledge in skin care. Clinicians can give patients a skin care routine, with SPF, that will not only block UV rays, but create healthier looking skin as it protects. At LUXURGERY, our staff is trained to know every skin product we offer to ensure that each patient gets the best products for their skin type.

What Can Microneedling Do?

Microneedling is not the trendy new procedure it may seem. People all over the world have been performing this type of collagen therapy for centuries. As technique has been refined, the results of professional microneedling treatments have improved.

A microneedling treatment involves the use of a mechanized, needle-clad applicator tip. As the applicator is moved across numbed skin, tiny perforations are made in a precise pattern and level of depth (.5 to 2.5mm). These perforations, or micro-channels, induce a proliferation of healing collagen.

What Are the Benefits of Microneedling?

Collagen heals wounds by thickening the skin around it. This is beneficial to the individual with acne scars, with stretch marks, and for the person who wants to restore or support firmness as the skin ages. Professional microneedling is beneficial because we are able to reach greater depths with our adjustable applicator, and do so without pain. One treatment about once a year can be what the skin needs to stay firmer, brighter, and smoother.

What Are Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels are longstanding treatments in dermatology and aesthetic medicine that are designed to exfoliate the skin beyond what is possible at home. This customized treatment removes the outermost layers of skin tissue, which incites collagen and promotes optimal cellular turnover.

What Are the Benefits of Chemical Peels?

One of the benefits of chemical peel treatment is that it is tailored to particular needs. This method of deep exfoliation is suitable for the treatment of acne and acne scarring, for the prevention of premature aging and sun damage, and for generally supporting the healthiest possible turnover of skin cells. Peels need not be intense and deep in order to get results. Deeper chemical peels do achieve more dramatic results more quickly, but a light or medium peel obtained on a regular basis can also improve the overall vibrancy and texture of the skin.

What Are the Benefits of Facials?

Facials are often perceived as pampering treatments that we indulge in when we want to relax. Not so. Facials cleanse, exfoliate, and moisturize the skin in such a way that general and unique concerns can be addressed. Some facials are formulated to improve the health of the skin by unclogging pores and soothing inflamed acne. Some are performed to promote hydration that declines with age. There are numerous benefits to routine facials, all culminating in the fact that your skin can look better, feel better, and age better.

What Laser Treatments Are Available for Skin Rejuvenation?

LUXURGERY is equipped with a gentle erbium laser that is used for skin resurfacing. This treatment targets the superficial layers of tissue for mild ablation. As a result of this technique, healthy new skin cells take over the surface. Additionally, collagen production increases alongside more robust circulation through the epidermis. Laser skin resurfacing is popular among adults of all ages due to its capabilities for skin smoothing, tightening, and brightening. The laser can be employed in a more aggressive manner to give longer lasting and more dramatic results.
