What is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting’s distinct non-surgical technology cools and freezes unwanted fat cells. The non-surgical aspect of CoolSculpt ensures very little, to no, downtime after the procedure. CoolSculpt is FDA-approved, safe and effective. CoolSculpting is a non-surgical fat reduction technology that gently and effectively targets the fat cells underneath the skin while leaving the skin itself unaffected. CoolSculpting works by freezing fat cells, causing these cells to crystallize and permanently die. The cells are naturally processed by the body and ultimately expelled.
Is Coolsculpting Safe?
The FDA first approved CoolSculpting for the abdomen and the flanks in 2010. As time has gone by, the FDA has approved subsequent areas, adding the thighs, back fat, bra line fat, the upper arms, the jowls, and fat underneath the buttocks. To date, over 6 million CoolSculpting procedures have been performed worldwide, with studies on safety described in over 100 clinical publications.
During your session you’ll feel sensations of pulling and mild pinching, followed by intense cold. This area will then become numb. Afterwards, you may have some temporary redness, tenderness, possible bruising, and some slight swelling. All of these possible issues resolve quickly and are not permanent.
What areas of the body does Coolsculpting treat?
The FDA has approved CoolSculpting for fat reduction on eight areas. No other non-invasive fat reduction treatment is approved for even half of these areas:
- Thighs
- Abdomen
- Double chin
- Back fat
- Bra line fat
- Upper arms
- Flanks
- Underneath the buttocks
Am I a good candidate for CoolSculpting?
Some people think CoolSculpting is a weight-loss procedure, akin to surgical procedures such as a gastric bypass. This is not true. CoolSculpting is a fat-reduction procedure designed for those who have unwanted fat in certain hard-to-address areas, such as the lower abdomen, flanks, even under the chin. CoolSculpting is not a procedure for people who are obese. Patients need to be within 10 percent of their ideal body weight to qualify for CoolSculpting at Luxurgery.
Does Coolsculpting tighten the skin as well as remove fat?
CoolSculpting only removes the fat through its patented freezing process. For most patients, once the fat is removed the skin naturally tightens down over the new slimmer contour. This is due to the natural elasticity in our skin.
If you have inelastic skin in the area/areas you’d like to have CoolSculpting, Dr. Shridharani will likely advise against it. With loose, sagging, inelastic skin, removing the fat will only exacerbate the problem. For these patients, Dr. Shridharani would likely recommend a surgery such as a tummy tuck or arm lift. These procedures remove excess skin and may employ some liposuction to remove fat as well.

Do I need general anesthesia when I undergo CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpt does NOT require general anesthesia.
Are there any needles involved in CoolSculpting?
Definitely NOT. CoolScultping is a noninvasive procedure that freezes unwanted fat cells. The applicator is placed on the problem area to cool and reduce the number of fat cells in that specific area.
How should I prepare for my Coolsculpting session?
There isn’t any preparation necessary for a CoolSculpting session at Luxurgery. These are completely non-invasive treatments. Your only preparation is deciding on entertainment while the CoolSculpting panels are freezing your unwanted fat. You can read, work on a laptop, watch videos, or even take a nap during your treatment — they are that easy to take.
How long is each session? How many sessions will I need?
Every patient is different and your goals will determine how many areas need to be treated and the number of sessions. Bring your iPad, tablet, laptop, or book. You will be comfortable and can clear email and watch a movie during your treatment at our office!
Where does the fat go? Are the results permanent?
The results are permanent. The fat cells are crystallized/frozen by the CoolSculpt machine during your treatment. Your body will naturally breakdown the old fat cells they will be naturally excreted.
Is CoolSculpting Painful?
When the treatment begins, you will feel pressure with an intense cold sensation, but these feelings quickly disappear. During the course of the procedure, one might experience pulling, numbness or a variety of other minor discomforts. Don’t be afraid to sleep, meditate, and/or return emails and phone calls during the procedure.
Can I return to normal activities after my treatment?
You certainly can! CoolSculpting is completely non-surgical, so you can generally head back to normal activity when you get done. We commonly see patients on their lunch breaks or afternoon’s off. Occasionally, a patient will have some redness, minor bruising, tingling, numbness or discomfort in the treated area. These symptoms and signs will go away soon.
Can I combine Coolsculpting with other treatments?
CoolSculpting can be combined with any of our non-surgical treatments, as long as you’re not addressing the same areas. Having dermal filler or neuromodulator injections are an easy complement to CoolSculpting. A HydraFacial refreshes your face after CoolSculpting has frozen your fat. The same is true of a chemical peel, microneedling, or dermaplaning.
During your consultation, if you’d like to combine treatments, we can discuss your options.
What type of results can I expect with Coolsculpting?
CoolSculpting is proven to remove from 20-25 percent of the fat in the treatment areas. Repeat applications to the same area won’t remove as much fat on subsequent treatments.
When will I see results after CoolSculpting?
Results are not present immediately after your procedure. You may see changes as early as three weeks after your treatment. You should appreciate the best results after two months. The patient’s body will continue to expel the dead fat cells for up to six months post treatment.
