Young doctors-to-be get first glimpses into their futures Sachin Shridharani, 24, let out a roaring below. His body seemed to go limp as he threw up his arms, tears welling in his eyes. His family embraced him. Dr. Shridharani of the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of Medicine was one of thousands of graduating medical students across the country who, on March 16, screamed and wept at the news of their residency assignments.
“This feeling is indescribable,” said Dr. Shridharani of Warrensburg, Mo.
He was accepted into the Johns Hopkins Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery integrated program in Baltimore, MD. He seized one of only 88 available plastic surgery residency spots in the nation for students fresh out of medical school. Dr. Shridharani is the second student in UMKC’s history to be accepted into the ultra-competitive program at Johns Hopkins.
“It’s the most fulfilling academic achievement I’ve ever had,” he said.
