At LUXURGERY in New York City, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Sachin M. Shridharani offers male breast reduction surgery to correct enlarged breast tissue for a more masculine look.
What Male Breast Reduction Treats
Gynecomastia refers to the growth of firm, often rubbery glandular tissue beneath the nipple. This type of tissue develops in response to hormonal shifts, typically an imbalance between estrogen and testosterone. It can occur during puberty, aging, or as a side effect of certain medications or health conditions.Â
Glandular tissue doesn’t shrink with diet or exercise, which is why true gynecomastia is more difficult to treat without surgery. It’s also what sets it apart from pseudogynecomastia, which is caused by excess fat in the chest area.Â
How the Surgery Works
Male breast reduction is typically done using one (or both) of two techniques: surgical excision and liposuction.Â
When glandular tissue is present, a small incision, usually around the edge of the areola, is made so the tissue can be removed directly. This is the part of the procedure that targets the dense tissue responsible for a firm or protruding chest.
If there’s also unwanted fat in the area, liposuction can refine the shape. Scars are discreet and typically fade well with time. Most patients wear a compression vest or shirt for a few weeks to support healing and help the chest settle into its new shape.Â
Recovery isn’t overly demanding, so you should be able to return to work within a few days, and light activity is often fine after the first week. Any workouts that put pressure on the chest should wait until your surgeon clears you, usually after several weeks.
