BBL Shrinkage: Why It May Happen

Diet and exercise aren’t always enough to achieve your goals for your physical appearance. Genetics also plays a role, so surgery may be required to get the look you want. For example, a Brazilian butt lift (BBL) can give you a fuller, rounder behind. This procedure is quickly growing in popularity, but patients often find the size of their buttocks begins decreasing shortly after the procedure.
During a BBL, the surgeon removes fat from an area with excess fat, typically the lower abdomen, hips, or thighs. A portion of this fat is then purified and further processed before the surgeon injects it into the buttocks. Not all of this fat will remain there, so surgeons intentionally inject more than is desired for the final result.
Causes of Shrinkage
The shrinkage that occurs after a BBL is normal and has two causes. The first is the swelling of soft tissue, largely due to the accumulation of fluid. This condition is known medically as edema and occurs with any surgery. Much of this swelling will resolve within three to six weeks.
The second cause of shrinking after a BBL is that not all the fat that’s injected into the buttocks will be maintained in the long term. Some of this fat will fail to take on a blood supply in its new location, causing it to be reabsorbed. This type of shrinkage typically occurs from six months to a year after the surgery.
Solution
The usual solution to post-BBL shrinkage is to simply wait for the final result, as this is a normal part of the healing process. Areas where the fat was removed will also shrink during this period, which will help accentuate the places where fat was added. You need to wait until this process is complete before deciding that your buttocks need additional enhancement.
