Body contouring is something many people want. It’s also a goal that can be difficult to achieve. Even with a lot of hard work, many adults don’t seem to reach that ultimate reward of the great body they have been dreaming of. This is one of several reasons why liposuction is so popular. This minimally-invasive procedure has helped millions of people jump that last hurdle to their best bodies. It can help you, too. If you’re considering liposuction, you’re also probably interested in knowing what happens after surgery. We’ll discuss that here.
Right After Liposuction
When liposuction is performed by itself, it is done as an outpatient procedure. In some cases, the patient needs only a local anesthetic for a completely comfortable process. When combined with another procedure, like a tummy tuck or thigh lift, liposuction is performed with general anesthesia. In either situation, patients are moved to a monitored recovery area at the conclusion of their procedure. There, they are observed as their anesthetic wears off. When they are alert enough, they are released to a loved one to return home. Someone should stay with them for about 24 hours.
The Few Weeks after Liposuction
During the first week or two after liposuction, patients wear a compression garment. It may be removed for bathing but should be applied again promptly. Compression helps move fluid away from the surgical area, which keeps swelling to a minimum. Patients may take prescription pain medication for at least a few days. By the end of the first week, this is usually no longer needed.
After liposuction, as is comfortable, patients should walk short distances. Walking helps circulate oxygen and nutrients through the surgical area for optimal healing. At first, it may only be comfortable to walk around the home. As it is comfortable to walk longer, such as down the block, patients should do so. Strenuous exercise, however, should wait until after the post-op visit.
What about Results?
Liposuction surgery and recovery are relatively easy. Maintaining results can be, as well. If you’ve already established a healthy lifestyle before liposuction, your habits should carry you through for quite some time. Patients can maintain their slim physique for many years, if not indefinitely, by eating a healthy diet and staying active after liposuction.
