What Causes Diastasis Recti?
The abdominal wall expands throughout pregnancy to accommodate a growing baby. As it stretches, the connective tissue between the two sides of the rectus abdominis muscles may widen. When that separation remains after delivery, it is called diastasis recti.
This condition can contribute to a rounded or bulging midsection, but postpartum changes often involve more than one concern. Loose skin and localized fat may also affect the abdomen’s shape.
These issues respond to different treatments. Liposuction can remove selected fat deposits, but it does not tighten separated muscles or remove a significant amount of excess skin. A broader body contouring evaluation looks at the skin, fat, and abdominal wall together.
Can Exercise Close the Muscle Separation?
Core exercises and physical therapy may improve strength, stability, and function. They may also help some people with mild separation. However, exercise cannot remove hanging skin or physically tighten the abdominal wall in the same way surgery can.
When diastasis recti remains bothersome despite recovery and rehabilitation, a tummy tuck may be considered. During the procedure, the abdominal wall can be tightened while loose skin and selected fat are removed.
A tummy tuck is not a weight-loss operation, nor does it correct every cause of abdominal fullness. A physical examination is needed to identify what is contributing to the change in shape.
Full Tummy Tuck vs. Mini Tummy Tuck
A full tummy tuck treats concerns above and below the belly button and may include repair of the abdominal wall. A mini tummy tuck is more limited, concentrating mainly on the lower abdomen below the navel.
The right approach depends on where the loose skin and muscle separation are located. Some patients have the procedure by itself, while others include it in a mommy makeover that also treats changes involving the breasts or other parts of the body.
How Is a TubelessTuckSM Different?
Traditional abdominoplasty often uses drains to prevent fluid from collecting beneath the skin during early healing. With the TubelessTuckSM technique, Dr. Shridharani uses dissolvable sutures to close the internal space where fluid could otherwise gather. This avoids the external drains commonly associated with tummy tuck recovery.
A drainless technique does not eliminate the normal healing process. Patients still need to follow activity restrictions, wear compression garments as directed, attend follow-up appointments, and allow swelling and tightness to settle.
The tummy tuck before-and-after gallery can provide a sense of the changes surgery may create, although every patient’s anatomy and outcome are different.
