“Drain” is not a very glamorous word; it’s something we usually associate with home improvement projects. However, this is also a common term that is used in cosmetic surgery, especially when we are discussing the path to a flat, tight stomach. There is no denying that every tummy tuck is somewhat involved and rather extensive. At the same time, wouldn’t it be nice to just forget the details and wake up to a sky full of rainbows and a full six-pack on your stomach? We agree, which is why we are so pleased to be one of the first practices in NYC to use a drainless tummy tuck technique.
Let’s Talk about Drains
The fact of the matter is that there are several surgical procedures that require the use of drains. A drain is a tube that remains partially within the surgical site and partially out of it. The point of having a drain is to allow fluid to escape naturally. If it doesn’t, it can accumulate beneath the skin and cause bruising or possible hematoma or seroma. There is a reasonable use for surgical drains, but the inconvenience of them prevents some people from addressing what concerns them about their body.
It’s important that we point out that having a surgical drain is not a painful endeavor. The major disadvantage of drains is that they are inconvenient; and when you’re recovering from surgery as meticulous as abdominoplasty, you want your recovery to be as convenient as possible. Drains make it difficult to shower, and may force you to take sponge baths for a short time. Drains have reservoirs to catch fluid, which means you’ve got small bulbs attached to your body at all times. Furthermore, as fluid accumulates in these reservoirs, it must be emptied. After a tummy tuck, what you want to do is take care of you, not surgical drains.
