Two scars can look similar in the mirror yet respond very differently to treatment. Depth, texture, color, age, and the way a scar formed all matter. LUXURGERY offers Sciton laser treatments in New York City, including ProFractional-XC™. Our founder, Sachin M. Shridharani, MD, FACS, is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and trained in plastic and reconstructive surgery, giving our scar evaluations both a surgical and cosmetic perspective.
How Does ProFractional Work?
ProFractional treats a fraction of the skin at a time by creating very small channels in the treatment area while leaving nearby skin intact. Those controlled channels prompt the skin’s natural repair response. Put simply, the laser resurfaces selected areas rather than removing the entire surface at once.
That can make ProFractional useful when uneven scar texture is part of the problem. It does not mean every scar belongs under the same laser. Our scar revision options also include microneedling, dermabrasion, other laser approaches, and surgical removal for scars that need a different type of correction.
Are Surgical Scars and Acne Scars Different?
Yes. A surgical scar follows an incision and continues to change as the tissue heals. Some become red, raised, widened, or indented. Timing matters, so laser treatment should be considered only after the area has healed enough for us to assess it properly.
Acne scars develop after acne lesions heal and can range from shallow surface changes to deeper indentations. Fractional laser resurfacing can be considered when uneven texture is the main issue, while other acne scars may respond better to another method or a combination of treatments.
When Might Another Treatment Make More Sense?
A raised scar, a keloid, a deep depression, and a flat discolored mark are different problems. Microneedling with PRP can be useful for some textural concerns, while other scars need another resurfacing method or surgical revision.
This is also where realistic expectations matter. Scar treatment can make a scar less noticeable, but it cannot promise completely unmarked skin. A useful treatment plan starts by identifying the type of scar you have and which feature, such as depth, color, or texture, bothers you most.
